A former South African international, Bernadine Bezuidenhout became available for New Zealand selection in March 2018 and was immediately selected for the WHITE FERNS winter tour to Ireland and England.
The Northern Spirit wicket-keeper-batswoman topped the domestic T20 runs table for the 2017/18 season and selector Kirsty Bond said Bezuidenhout had the kind of the qualities the WHITE FERNS were after.
“She’s an innovative player with a wide skill-set and plays that aggressive style of cricket which we believe we need going forward.
“Bernadine’s also an excellent athlete who’s good in the park and that aligns with our intention to build a multi-faceted team-unit, particularly for T20 cricket.”
1. Where did you grow up and how you did you get into cricket?
I'm from the small city of Kimberley in South Africa. I moved to George when I was 13 and then lived in Cape Town for a bit before moving to Christchurch.
I first got into playing in the backyard, and then played for the school team at the age of 6 when I started primary school. My dad and brother both played cricket so sport has always been in the family.
2. How did coming to NZ and pursuing a career with the WHITE FERNS come about?
NZ is a beautiful country and it's a country that's really passionate about sport. I made the decision to move to New Zealand to further progress my cricketing journey. Playing for the White Ferns was always the ultimate goal. Growing up, I used to watch the White Ferns play on TV at world cups and have always admired how they went about their game. Players like Suzie Bates, Amy Satterthwaite
3. How did you find settling into NZ and ND? What’s the Spirit environment like?
It's always tough leaving family behind but I think I've settled in quite well. I enjoy being active so the outdoors lifestyle here is great! Playing for Spirit has really developed my game. The first season I played we were coached by Emily Drumm, who I consider to be one of the legends of the game. I received so much valuable information from her and I'm blessed enough to still be in touch with her for advice.
4. What motivates you?
Jesus Christ is my motivation. Fulfilling my purpose in life and knowing I've done all I can to pursue the talent I have been given is what drives me.
5. How would you describe your playing style
I enjoy playing a 360 game and probably have a bit of an unorthodox style because of it. But generally, I just try to stick to my natural game and play with positive intent as much as possible.
6. What are you looking forward to the most about touring the UK with the WHITE FERNS?
Learning. Being in a changing room with some of the best players in world cricket is going to be an incredible experience
7. What’s something we may not know about you?
I've just completed my certification as a weight loss consultant, I'm a neat freak, and I gym 6 days a week. I also enjoy playing a bit of golf in my spare time.
